Inside a RiseYou AI Interview: What Actually Happens to 1,000 Applicants

Inside a RiseYou AI Interview: What Actually Happens to 1,000 Applicants

Most candidates never see what happens between clicking 'Apply' and getting a decision. We pulled the numbers on our own funnel — screening, AI interview, HR review — to show exactly where people move forward and where they don't.

Key takeaways

  • Profile screening and the AI Interview Round test different things — screening checks fit and legitimacy, the interview evaluates the actual skills the role needs.
  • Only 18% of applicants who start ever complete the full AI interview, but that's by design, not a leak to fix.
  • Every question a candidate hears is generated fresh for them — nobody gets a recycled question bank.
  • HR only ever sees candidates who've already cleared both stages, so their time goes to real decisions, not first-pass filtering.

Ask ten candidates what happens after they click "Apply" and you'll get ten guesses. A resume gets read by someone, eventually. Maybe. That opacity is one of the most common complaints about hiring — and it's exactly what an AI-driven pipeline is supposed to fix, if it's built to actually explain itself rather than just move faster.

So here's the real shape of it, stage by stage, using aggregate numbers from our own platform.

The full funnel

For every 1,000 people who start an application, the numbers break down like this:

Stage one: profile screening

This is the fastest stage and the widest gate. It's a short, conversational check — not a technical evaluation — that confirms the basics: is this a real, legitimate application, and does the candidate's background plausibly fit what the role needs. It has nothing to do with the specific job posting; it's the same bar for every applicant on the platform.

Stage two: the AI Interview Round

This is where it gets specific to the actual job. Once a candidate applies to a real posting, the system builds an interview plan out of topic "blocks" suited to that role — a customer-facing role gets tested differently than a backend engineering role — and Tara, our voice AI interviewer, runs the conversation live.

Nobody gets a recycled question bank. The plan format may repeat for a given role, but the actual questions, coding problems, and scenarios are generated fresh for every candidate, every time.

Why that drop-off isn't a bug

18% sounds low until you consider what the two stages are actually doing: screening removes people who were never a plausible fit at all, and the interview only runs for candidates who already cleared that bar for a specific real job. What's left by the end is a small, genuinely qualified group — not a wide net that HR then has to manually sift through.

Stage three: HR review

HR never sees the 1,000 — they see the 180 who made it through both filters, already scored, with a full transcript and breakdown by topic. Their job at this stage is judgment on real candidates, not first-pass filtering.

candidates, out of every 1,000 who start, get advanced by HR to a next-round interview.

What this means if you're applying

If you don't pass screening, it's not a reflection on your resume — it's a fast, honest no before you invest 20 minutes in an interview for a role that was never going to be a fit. If you do reach the AI interview, you're being evaluated against the same real bar every other candidate for that role sees, not a different, harder, or easier one depending on who's watching.
